Barbados, An Adventure Rich in History, Culture and Gastronomy

Barbados offers a Caribbean experience rooted in a rich history and colorful culture. Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, is a historic city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The island is known as the birthplace of rum, producing and bottling this liquor commercially since the 18th century.

Barbados is home to two of the three remaining Jacobean mansions left in the Western Hemisphere, as well as old rum distilleries,” according to Corey Garrett, director of the Caribbean and Latin America for Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

Barbados hosts world-class annual events, including the Barbados Rum and Food Festival, the Barbados Reggae Festival and the Crop Over Festival, where celebrities like Lewis Hamilton and national heroine Rihanna are often seen.

Adventure lovers can explore all the experiences and discover the secrets that set Barbados people and culture apart from the rest of the Caribbean. From bike rides along hidden paths on the East Coast to enjoy a fresh fish sandwich at a flashy beach bar with the whole family, Barbados offers a vacation experience for every type of traveler to immerse themselves in the Barbadian culture and way of life.

“Accommodations are vast and varied, from quaint plantation houses and villas to alluring bed and breakfast gems, prestigious international chains, and five-diamond award-winning resorts. Grantley Adams International Airport offers a host of direct, nonstop services from a growing number of ports of entry in the US, UK, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe and Latin America.

As a family destination, the director of the Caribbean and Latin America for Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., details that “the island offers more than 50 beaches of brilliant white sand. It’s home to expansive nature and wildlife experiences perfect for families, from caves and mountains like Animal Flower Cave, to botanical gardens like Hunte’s Gardens, underwater experiences, hikes and more.

“Two of the most popular sports in Barbados are polo, which attracts teams from all over the world, and cricket. Families can visit Kensington Oval, the oldest cricket ground in Barbados,” he says.

Regarding the measures taken by covid-19, Garrett explains that rapid antigen tests are accepted to enter the country. Also, there is no quarantine period for travelers with all vaccinations and valid negative results. “The widely popular rapid tests are readily available in Barbados’ major source markets, with results typically delivered within an hour.

Rapid antigen tests for entry into Barbados must be administered by a health care provider no more than one day prior to arrival in Barbados,” she states. Along with rapid antigen tests, covid-19 PCR tests carried out no more than three days before arrival in Barbados are also on the list of tests approved for entry into the country. The island can be easily reached via Miami through American Airlines. The direct flight is just under four hours. The island connects to Latin America through Copa Airlines.
