Samantha Crain, the front of the band Samantha Crain & The Midnight Shivers, is from Shawnee, OK. She writes and sings really good songs. And her band is playing September 26th at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa.

And did I mention that the HOT HOT HOT Avett Brothers are gonna play after her?

Some cool-ass stuff sure does come outta Norman.

The PFC Performing Arts group features some recent acquaintances of mine, and I’d like to share with you what they do.

We are not Private First Class or Peoples Film Channel. I mean it is Pretty Freakin’ Classified and though we have been called a Precambrian Folklore Collection some think we are more like a Positive Frenzied Circasaurus. We decline to comment about what we think of being called Platypus Fried Chicken but I’m sure you can guess such discussion could lead to Parliamentary Fatigue Condition.

PFC street performance troupe has range of tricks and talents including hula hooping, fire dancing, stilt walking, juggling, singing, drumming, unicycling, human sculpture, rope walking, interpretive dance, comedy, clowning and oh so much more.

We have performed in Ghouls Gone Wild, the Norman Mardi Gras Parade, Norman Music Festival and the Second Friday Art Circuit. We are here to entertain and to invite our audience to the possibility of expanding their view of Okie Art.

Our improvisational street performers wear handmade costumes and wield recycled art props.

Forgot how to play or how to have fun? Let PFC remind you!

You can see pictures of their performances and acts on their Facebook page linked above. Viva living art!

Ever yours,
Beamish

God did not create them man and woman

And it took a fast, badass

woman from South Africa

to make the rest

of the world realize this.

And I, for one, think this is what you get!

For trying to make every flesh and bone

fit into two stuffy little molds.

Girl. Boy.

Doll. Toy.

For telling the ones born without a penis that they can’t vote,

Can’t pray in church, can’t read, can’t write, can’t drive, can’t show some hair.

Can’t apply for a loan…

Can’t run a business of their own.

Can’t run here.

Can’t run there.

And I think, this is what you get!

For trying to read it in Genesis, and believing that God would write it down.

In a storybook.

A book where men are better, and men save the world.

A world where men can’t vote,

Can’t pray in church, can’t read, can’t write,

Unless they’re white.

This is what you get!

Now where are you gonna run?

Back to your birth certificate?

Back to the hospital that issued it?

Back to your mama?

Back to the doctor who got it wrong?

Back to the book or the publisher?

Back to the singer or the songwriter?

Back to the hammer or the nail?

Back to the proof of ownership?

Or the proof of citizenship?

Back to bed

To rest your head.

This is what you get!

For trying to figure it.

For trying to categorize it.

For trying to test it.

For trying to stop it.

And I’m not hating anyone.

But think twice next time you pray

‘God sent His only begotten Son…’

Think twice

how you’re gonna call this One.

This One saving the world?

This One badass girl.

Friend –

I just finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint session of Congress. Now, I’m writing directly to you because what happens next is critical — and I need your help.

Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows where I stand. Now they need to hear from you.

Add your voice: Ask your representatives to support my plan for real health reform in 2009:

http://my.barackobama.com/SupportReform

The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and security to Americans who already have health insurance, guarantee affordable coverage for those who don’t, and rein in the cost of health care.

Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to create a plan that’s bold, practical, and represents the broad consensus of the American people.

We’ve come closer to real health reform in the last few months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who profit from the status quo — and those who put partisan advantage above all else — will fight us every inch of the way.

We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the path. Your voice, right now, is essential.

See my full plan and call on your representatives to support it:

http://my.barackobama.com/SupportReform

Ours is not the first generation to understand the dire need for health reform. And I am not the first President to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last.

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

P.S.  Congressman Joe Wilson is your pre-existing condition.  Hint: he’s the one who yelled “Liar!” during the speech.

Update on Caster Semenya

September 8, 2009

caster_you_mag

My friends, have you seen this photo? Disturbing, I know. But not as bad as (some of) the coverage of Semenya’s makeover.

Writing for Yahoo! Sports, Chris Chase is so confident:

Despite what you think about the whole situation, it’s safe to say that this is the first time that Semenya has truly looked like an 18-year old woman.

I think it’s safe to say that Chris Chase needs a brain makeover.

Take that,

Caster Semenya

Caster Semenya

Maybe you all have heard the story of Caster Semenya, the South African runner who won the 800m gold medal at the world championships recently; she is amazing, and fast, and muscular, and doesn’t wear her hair down when she runs. Then, lo and behold, concerns were raised that she wasn’t really a female. So the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), put her through several tests- including hormonal, gynecological!, and psychological- to prove she was a female.

All this, and Semenya is 18 years old.

The hormone tests are now back, and the results show that she has unusually high levels of testosterone “expected in a female sample”.

Here’s (some of) the problems:

#1 Testosterone levels vary from person to person, from male to male, and from female to female. They also vary at different times of the month, different times of your life  (increasing during puberty), even at different times during any given day (highest in the morning), and over the course of any given activity (levels drop after ejaculation, for instance). They often increase under pressure or when risk or harm is posed to an individual. They also increase in winners of a competition and decrease in the losers of a competition!

To summarize, my first point is that TESTOSTERONE LEVELS ARE TOO COMPLICATED AND MYSTERIOUS TO PROVE SOMETHING AS BANAL AS WHETHER OR NOT AN INDIVIDUAL IS MALE OR FEMALE.

#2 People who have been writing about this case, as well as the people who are conducting the testing of Semenya make no distinction between the terms ‘SEX’ and ‘GENDER.’ See ESPN. See The Guardian. See USA Today. What’s the big difference, you ask? It is this: SEX refers to the type of reproductive organs you are born with. What’s between your legs, to put is vulgarly. However, and this is a big however, more than two sexes exist in ALL animal species, especially the human species. When you are born with a mash-up, a variety, a rainbow of XX AND XY chromosomes, you are intersex. Sometimes, being intersex shows up at birth (which presents a real problem for these babies because they encounter all kinds of doctor and parental biases toward “girls” and “boys”.) But sometimes nobody, not even you yourself will know that you are born with both kinds of chromosomes. Sometimes, men have a penis, produce offspring, feel and look like a regular dude, but upon autopsy after they die, they are found to also have a set of ovaries! This chart is very enlightening if you want to look into intersex diversity further.

Okay, so what is ‘GENDER’? Gender is how an individual identifies her or himself. Period. That’s it, in my humble opinion. And, this is why, to me, the Caster Semenya story is such a tragedy. She says she’s a girl. She was raised as a girl. She wore skirts to school for cryin’ out loud! No matter what any doctor with ten degrees says, or what endocrinology tests show, there is only one expert on Caster Semenya’s gender, and that is Caster Semenya!

The test results may show that she is intersex or whatever, but that doesn’t prove she was cheating, nor do I think that means that she should be disqualified. It means that the categories that sports and the rest of our society have constructed are too plain to contain our complexities as human beings.

I also think that she is being poked and prodded like a fuckin’ animal, and I think it’s because she is a woman and she is good and she is black and she is young. Which is fuckin’ disgusting. So there.

Pardon my language,

Spring

Janelle Monae

September 4, 2009

hey, kids!

michael featured a video by artist janelle monae on his blog laminated fragments, and i wanted to share it with all of you!

 wikipedia says of monae,

Janelle Monáe, a Kansas City, Kansas native, moved to New York to study theatre at the American Musical Academy. Her original plan was to pursue a career on the stages of Broadway, but she soon changed her mind and returned to her love for music, an art form which, according to her, has the potential to change the world.[1]

Moving to Atlanta, Ga, where she met OutKast‘s Big Boi, Monáe continued to explore her own artistic world, founded the Wondaland Arts Society with like-minded young artists and made a couple of appearances on Idlewild, where she is featured on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams.”

By mid-2007, Monáe was ready to release her first solo album, entitled “Metropolis.” It was originally conceived as a concept album in four parts, or “suites,” which were to be released only through her website and mp3 download sites. These plans were altered upon her signing with Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ label, Bad Boy Records, in late 2007. The label gave an official and material release to “Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition)” in August 2008. The album was generally well-received, by critics, garnering Monáe a 2009 Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her song “Many Moons” [2], festival appearances and opening slots for the indie pop band Of Montreal.

Monáe also toured as the opening act for band No Doubt on their summer tour.[3] Her latest single, “Open Happiness,” was featured in the 2009 season finale of American Idol. [4]

Metropolis, Suites II and III were penciled in for a January 2009 release, but were postponed.
